Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French naissance origin, birth (beginning of the 12th cent. in Old French) < naiss- (in naissant , present participle of naïtre to be born: see naissant adj.) + -ance -ance suffix, after classical Latin nāscentia nascency n. Compare also later nascence n., nascency n. In sense 2 after German Naissance (O. Wagner Moderne Architektur (ed. 2, 1898) 45, or earlier), spec. use of French naissance.
