Origin: A borrowing from Central Yupik. Etymon: Central Yupik maklak.
Etymology: < Central Yupik maklak bearded seal, taken to mean ‘sealskin’ and applied to boots made with sealskin soles; compare:1868 F. Whymper Trav. Alaska 136 Their boots vary in length, and in the material used for the sides, but all have soles of ‘maclock’, or sealskin, with the hair removed.
(a) A high boot worn by the Inuit and Yupik peoples, traditionally made of seal or caribou skin. (b) A winter boot with a heavy rubber sole and a high fabric upper, usually with laces. Also more fully mukluk boot.
