Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Inupiaq. Partly a borrowing from Western Canadian Inuit. Etymons: Inupiaq maktak; Western Canadian Inuit maktaq.
Etymology: < Inupiaq maktak and its cognate Western Canadian Inuit maktaq whaleskin with blubber attached.
The skin and outer blubber of a whale, used as food by the Inuit.
