Etymology: Shortened < manuscript n. (as a graphic abbreviation, although now frequently with corresponding spoken realization /ˌɛmˈɛs/; compare also humorous use in verse in quots. 1818 at sense 1 and 1821 at sense 1), after similar use of MS (plural MSS) in post-classical Latin from late 16th cent. or earlier as graphic abbreviation for both manuscriptus (adjective) and manuscriptum (noun). Compare also MSS as graphic abbreviation for the plural of the corresponding noun in Italian from 1587.The forms MSS in quot. 16992 at sense 1 and MSS. in quot. 1798 at sense 1 follow practice in post-classical Latin when the graphic abbreviation represents manuscriptus modifying a plural noun.

A title of courtesy prefixed to the surname of a woman, sometimes with her first name interposed.Ms has been adopted esp. in formal and business contexts as an alternative to Mrs and Miss principally as a means to avoid having to specify a woman's marital status (regarded as irrelevant, intrusive, or potentially discriminatory).
