单词 muallaqat
释义

Mu'allaqatn.

Brit. /muːaləˈkɑːt/, /muːˈaləkat/, U.S. /ˌmuɑləˈkɑt/
Forms: 1700s–1800s Moallakat, 1700s– Muallakat, 1900s– Muʿallaqat, 1900s– Mu'allaqat.
Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic muʿallaqāt.
Etymology: < Arabic muʿallaqāt, title of an anthology of pre-Islamic odes, plural of muʿallaqa, of uncertain origin. The Arabic word was formerly thought to have the literal meaning ‘suspended ones’ ( < the passive participle of ʿallaqa to suspend, attach to, with reference to the poems' apparently being hung in honour in the Kaaba), and this derivation is reflected in a number of the quots. It is now more widely thought to be connected with the use of ʿilq necklace, ornament in the titles of old Arabian anthologies and collections, perhaps with the literal meaning ‘hanging jewels’, or perhaps ‘esteemed precious’ < the passive participle of ʿallaqa to hold precious, denominative verb < ʿilq.
An anthology of seven pre-Islamic Arabian odes, each by a different 6th-cent. author, and said to have been collected together by Ḥammad al-Rāawiya (d. 772).
