Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mucēdin- , mūcēdo , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin mucēdin-, mūcēdo mucus (in post-classical Latin in sense ‘mould’, after classical Latin mūcēre to be mouldy: see mucor n.) + -ous suffix. Compare uredinous adj. Compare French mucédinées, plural noun (1840 or earlier).
Mycology and Botany. Now rare.
Of the nature of or resembling mould or mildew; white and cottony; (formerly) spec. †designating a fungus of the former family Mucedineae (obsolete).
