Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mūcus , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin mūcus mucus n. + -ic suffix.With mucic acid compare slightly earlier mucous acid n. Mucic acid was discovered by the Swedish chemist C. W. Scheele (1742–86) in 1780 ( Kongl. Vetenskaps Acad. Nya Handlingar 1 273; also 6 (1785) 24); he called it mjölk-såcker-syra, lit. ‘milk sugar acid’.

1. mucic acid n. = galactaric acid n. at galactaric adj. Formerly also called saccholactic or saclactic acid. Cf. mucous acid n.
