Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mucivorae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mucivorae, former group name (J. B. Robineau-Desvoidy Essai sur les myodaires (1830) 473; also French Mucivores , plural), feminine plural of Mucivorus < classical Latin mūcus mucus n. + -vorus (see -vorous comb. form). Compare slightly earlier mucivorous adj. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (miū·sivōəɹ) /ˈmjuːsɪvɔə(r)/.
Entomology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A dipteran insect of the former group Mucivora, which feeds on the mucilaginous juices of plants.

1864 Webster's Amer. Dict. Eng. Lang. Mucivore, one of a family of dipterous insects, including those which feed upon the mucus or juices of plants, and the like.
