单词 needler
释义

needlern.

Brit. /ˈniːdl̩ə/, /ˈniːdlə/, U.S. /ˈnid(ə)lər/
Forms: Middle English nedelere, Middle English nedler, Middle English–1500s nedeler, 1600s– needler.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: needle n., -er suffix1, needle v.
Etymology: In sense 1 < needle n. + -er suffix1; with quot. 1970 at sense 1 compare needle v. 2c. In sense 2 < needle v. + -er suffix1. Compare Middle Low German nāteler, nātelere, (rare) nādeler, etc., Middle High German nādelære, nādeler (German †Nadeler, Nadler).Apparently earliest in a street name (see quot. 1275 at sense 1). A metathesised form of the same word is apparently shown by the Middle English surnames Neldare and Neldere : see e.g. quot. 1275 at sense 1; with similar metathesis, compare Middle High German nāldener, nēldener.
1. Originally: a person who makes needles (disused). Now applied to various other occupations involving the handling of needles (see quots. 1921, 1970).
