单词 muraena
释义

muraenan.

Brit. /mjʊˈriːnə/, U.S. /mjʊˈrinə/
Forms: 1500s–1700s murene, 1600s muraene, 1600s– muraena, 1800s– murena.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mūraena.
Etymology: < classical Latin mūraena, mūrēna a kind of eel, a moray (and, by confusion, a lamprey) < ancient Greek μύραινα , also σμύραινα , perhaps < the same Indo-European base as smear n. Compare Old French murene (c1265; c1100 as morayne ; Middle French, French murène ), Old Occitan, Occitan morena , Italian murena (a1292), Spanish morena (1423), murena (1494), Catalan morena (c1300), Portuguese moréia (1519; > moray n.).Compare Hellenistic Greek μῦρος (masculine), ancient Greek σμῦρος , another kind of eel, < μύραινα (feminine), on the model of λύκος (masculine) wolf, beside λύκαινα (feminine) she-wolf. There is no etymological connection (compare quot. 1985) between classical Latin mūraena, mūrēna and Mūrēna, a cognomen frequent in the gens Licinia, and especially that of Licinius Murena, consul in 62 b.c. The Greek transcription of the cognomen is Μουρήνας, and the name appears to be Etruscan.
In early use: an eel-like fish mentioned by ancient writers. Later: a moray eel, spec. one of the genus Muraena; (in form Muraena) the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 244.
