Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin murcus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin murcus mutilated, truncated (4th cent., used of a those who cut off a thumb to escape military service; 1682 in the passage translated in quot. 1684) + -ous suffix.Post-classical Latin murcus is of uncertain origin; it is perhaps cognate with marcēre to wither (see marcid adj.). It incorporates the adjective-forming suffix -cus , apparently associated with physical defects (compare caecus (see caecum n.) and peccare : see peccant adj.).
Obsolete. rare.
