单词 muttie
释义

muttien.

Brit. /ˈmʌti/, U.S. /ˈmədi/, Scottish English /ˈmʌtɪ/
Forms: pre-1700 muty, pre-1700 1700s– muttie, 1800s mutty.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: multure n., -y suffix6.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps a diminutive of a variant of multure n. (compare forms muttor, mutour, mwtter, muter s.v.); compare -y suffix6. Sc. National Dict. s.v. compares Dutch maatje in similar use, but notes that an etymology from this word is problematic on phonological grounds.
Scottish.
A unit of dry measure used in mills, equal to one quarter or (less commonly) one third of a Scottish peck, i.e. 1¾ lb (0.79 kg) or 2⅓ lb (1.06 kg), respectively. Also: a vessel of this capacity. Cf. peck n.1 1a, lippie n.1
