Etymology: < French muriate (L. B. Guyton de Morveau, 1782 in Observations sur la physique 19 380) < classical Latin muria (see muriatic adj.) + French -ate -ate suffix4, after muriatique muriatic adj.). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (miūə·riĕt) /ˈmjʊərɪət/.
Chemistry.
A salt of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid; a chloride.The name muriate has been superseded in formal chemical nomenclature by chloride, but it persists in commercial and industrial use; cf. muriatic acid n.
