An Islamic revival movement active in the Caucasus throughout the 19th cent., which advocated the rising of Muslims against their religious and political Russian opponents.The movement first evolved in central Asia in the 14th cent. and was revived at the end of the 18th cent. by Ismail Effendi of Shirvan.
