Etymology: Form and etymology uncertain.The word occurs only in contexts translating or referring to passages in the Bible which refer to the third plague of Egypt, where the Vulgate has post-classical Latin sciniphes , ciniphes (already in classical Latin (Petronius) as scinīphēs ), transliterating Hellenistic Greek σκνῖϕες (plural; already in ancient Greek as κνῖϕες ) in the Septuagint, (probably) flies, midges (see ciniphes n.). H. Whitehall in Philol. Q. (1939) 28 314–16 suggests a possible etymology from a Germanic cognate of midge n. (compare Dutch regional (West Flemish) meuzie (also attested in forms meze , mezie , meuze ), Middle Dutch mesie , meusie , mosie ), supported by instances of the use of midge for sciniphes elsewhere in Old English and Middle English glosses and translations, and similarly in Dutch (the -t- in quot. a1500 being explained as a result simply of transmission error).
