Etymology: Apparently < the name of Captain Edward A. Murphy, who performed studies on deceleration for the U.S. Air Force in 1949 (during which he noted that if things could be done wrongly, they would be) + law n.1 (see R. A. J. Matthews The Science of Murphy's Law in Proc. Royal Inst. (1999) 70 75); see quot. 1962 for another theory (numerous other suggestions have also been made).The notion that ‘If anything can go wrong, it will’ is often referred to earlier, sometimes being referred to as the fourth law of thermodynamics (1944 or earlier; compare quot. 1953; see also quot. 1951).
