Compare post-classical Latin musardus (13th cent. in British sources; earlier (1086) as a surname), Italian musardo ( < French).Apparently attested earlier as a surname: Hascoit Musard (1086), Hascuil Musard (1161–2), Will. Musard (1228), Radulfo Musard (1254), etc., although it is unclear whether these are to be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word.
