单词 muscardine
释义

muscardinen.

Brit. /ˈmʌskədᵻn/, /ˈmʌskədiːn/, U.S. /ˈməskərd(ə)n/, /ˈməskərˌdin/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French muscardine, muscardin.
Etymology: < French muscardine (1763) < muscardin silkworm affected by this disease (1763), specific use of †muscardin muscadine n.2, so called because the affected silkworms had a chalky appearance similar to that of a musk lozenge. Compare Occitan muscardin silkworm affected by this disease, muscardino the disease itself. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒskā·ɹdin) /mʌˈskɑːdiːn/.
Any of various fungal diseases affecting silkworms and other insects (more fully muscardine disease). Also: any of the fungi, esp. of the genera Beauveria and Metarhizium, causing these diseases (more fully muscardine fungus).
