muzzledadj.2

Forms: 1600s muzzeld, 1800s muzzled.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Compare slightly later muzzle adj. Both words are perhaps related to mosy adj. or muzzy adj. (compare muzzle v.2), although the correspondence in sense is not exact in either case. N.E.D. (1908) suggests an etymology < Old French meslé , past participle of mesler (see meddle v.); however, meslé is not attested in these specific senses and the phonetic development would be difficult to explain. Phonetic difficulty similarly seems to rule out a link with measled adj. 1b.
Obsolete. rare.
Speckled, brindled, dappled, variegated. Cf. muzzle adj.
