Etymology: Perhaps < Na- (see Na n.) + -fi- (in filter n., filtration n., etc.) + -on (in Teflon n.).An early use of this substance (which was developed in the late 1960s by Dr Walther G. Grot at DuPont) was in the electrolysis of sodium chloride.

Chemistry.

A proprietary name for: a perfluorinated polymer containing sulphonic acid groups, used esp. as a selectively permeable ion-exchange membrane and as a catalyst for some organic syntheses.
