Etymology: < Tamil nākacvaram, variant of nākacuram < nākam cobra, snake ( < Sanskrit nāga snake: see Naga n.¹) + curam sound ( < Sanskrit svara sound, note: see svara n.), apparently ultimately (by folk etymology) < Persian sūrnāy surnai n.Forms with initial element nada-, such as nadasvaram, nadaswara, and nadaswaram, are also found in English contexts.

A double-reed wind instrument of South India, similar to the oboe but larger, with a wide, conical mouth, frequently played in ceremonial ensembles.
