Etymology: < German Nagelfluh (18th cent.), originally a German regional (Swiss) compound < Nagel (see nail n.) + Fluh bare rock, rock face (9th cent.; also German regional (southern) Flüe ; Middle High German vluo , Old High German fluoh ; cognate with Old English flōh chip, Old Icelandic fló layer, stratum: see floe n.).
Geology.
A massive conglomerate of Miocene age which is associated with the molasse of the Swiss Alps and contains pebbles likened to nail heads.
