Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: no adv.2
Etymology: Representing a regional and colloquial pronunciation of no adv.2 (compare sense 2 at that entry, especially the later sense 2c); apparently formed independently from nah adv.2 Compare naw adv.Perhaps sometimes influenced in form and sense by similar (and mutually unrelated) particles in other languages, e.g. Twi anaa interrogative particle, also used as a tag question, French non no, also used informally as a tag question to elicit agreement (see non n.4), and in the Caribbean also Hindi , particle expressing emphasis.
Chiefly Caribbean and West African.
Used as an introductory or terminal tag in a question or command, inviting assent or compliance (often without the expectation of reply): ‘eh?’, ‘isn't that so?’, ‘won't you?’, etc. Also used for emphasis or as a general conversational filler. Cf. no adv.2 2c.
