Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Muscidae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Muscidae, family name (W. Kirby & W. Spence Introd. Entomol. (1815) I. 136, after French Muscides (P. A. Latreille 1802) < scientific Latin Musca (see Musca n.: adopted as genus name by Linnaeus in his Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 589) + -idae (see -id suffix3). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒ·sˌsid) /ˈmʌssɪd/.
