Etymology: < scientific Latin Muscoidea, superfamily name (D. W. Coquillett 1901, in Proc. U.S. National Mus. 23 653) < Musca (see muscid adj. and n.) + -oidea , suffix forming superfamily names (see -oid suffix). Compare earlier scientific Latin Muscoides, proposed order name for the Diptera (J. N. von Laicharting 1781).
