Etymology: < mycetes n.², as corresponding singular form; perhaps partly after mycetoma n. (compare quot. 1972).Frequently after Italian micete fungus (1895). There already existed in English a number of singular forms in -mycete corresponding to Latin group names in -mycetes, of which the earliest include ascomycete, hymenomycete, gasteromycete, and myxomycete, all dating from the late 19th cent.
