Etymology: < ancient Greek μυκητ-, μύκης mushroom, fungus (probably ultimately cognate with mucus n.) + -o- connective. Compare myco- comb. form.The earliest attested formation is apparently French mycétologie (1783), subsequently adapted as English mycetology n.; scientific Latin formations are also found from the late 18th cent. (e.g. Mycetophagus : see mycetophagous adj.). The earliest independent English formations are from the mid 19th cent.
