Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin mȳthicos; Greek μυθικός.
Etymology: < classical Latin mȳthicos (Varro, as recorded by Augustine) or its etymon ancient Greek μυθικός < μῦθος mythos n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Middle French, French mythique (1570 in théologie mythique (compare quot. 1669 at sense 1), in a translation of Augustine; reborrowed in the 19th cent.). Compare slightly earlier mythical adj.
1. Of, belonging to, or characteristic of myths; based in myth. Also in weakened sense: incredible, fantastical. Cf. mythical adj.
