Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: music n., drama n.
Etymology: < music n. + drama n., after German Musikdrama (1869 or earlier; apparently coined by German music critics to designate the later operas of Richard Wagner (see below)).
An opera whose style and structure are governed by considerations of dramatic effectiveness rather than by formal operatic convention; the genre comprising such works. More generally: opera; an opera.The concept of the music drama in its more specific sense is associated particularly with the operas of Richard Wagner (1813–83).
