Etymology: < scientific Latin -mycota, ending of names of fungal phyla or divisions (1951; as Ascomycota , Basidiomycota , etc.) < myco- comb. form + -ta (in -phyta , ending of names of higher plant taxa (as Metaphyta n.) < ancient Greek ϕυτά , plural of ϕυτόν plant (see phyton n.)).The ending -mycota was proposed as an alternative to the older ending -mycetes (see mycetes n.²), which is now generally used for names of fungal classes.
