Etymology: < French musique concrète (1950 or earlier: see note below) < musique music n. + concrète concrete adj.The term was coined by Pierre Schaeffer (1910–95), French radio broadcaster, who pioneered this style of music. The earliest printed appearance of the term is apparently in the title of Schaeffer's 1950 article ‘Introduction à la musique concrète’ (in La musique mecanisée: polyphonie 6 30), but it is widely acknowledged that Schaeffer began his experiments with this genre in 1948.
