单词 myxa
释义

myxan.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myxa.
Etymology: < classical Latin myxa the tree sebesten, the fruit of this tree (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek μύξα (Dioscorides). The Greek word probably represents a transferred use of ancient Greek μύξα mucus (see mucus n.), owing to the mucilaginous nature of the fruit. Compare earlier myxe n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mi·ksă) /ˈmɪksə/.
Obsolete.
The mucilaginous fruit of the tropical Asian tree Cordia myxa (family Boraginaceae), used medicinally and in making birdlime; (also) the tree itself. Also called sebesten.
