单词 musk rose
释义

musk rosen.

Brit. /ˈmʌsk rəʊz/, U.S. /ˈməsk ˌroʊz/
Forms: see musk n. and rose n.1 and adj.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: musk n., rose n.1
Etymology: < musk n. + rose n.1, after post-classical Latin rosa moschata (1554 in the passage translated in quot. 1559); so called from its musky odour. Compare Middle French, French rose muscade (1554).
An autumn-flowering, climbing garden rose, Rosa moschata (not known for certain to exist in the wild), with large white musk-scented flowers growing in clusters. Also: any of certain hybrids evolved from this (more fully hybrid musk rose). The true musk rose is now almost unknown in cultivation, having been superseded by the similar but earlier-flowering Himalayan musk rose and the hybrid musk roses. The term may have been used loosely in poetry to refer to the field rose, Rosa arvensis.
