单词 muslin
释义

muslinn.adj.

Brit. /ˈmʌzlᵻn/, U.S. /ˈməzl(ə)n/
Forms: 1600s mossuline, 1600s muscelin, 1600s muslina, 1600s muzlin, 1600s muzling, 1600s–1700s musling, 1600s– muslin, 1700s musselin, 1700s musslin, 1700s mussolin; Scottish pre-1700 mushlin, pre-1700 musseline, pre-1700 mussiline, pre-1700 1700s musline, 1700s museling, 1700s mussline, 1700s muzzlin, 1700s– muslin, 1900s– mislin.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mousseline.
Etymology: < French mousseline (1656), probably < Italian mussolina (tela ), although this is first attested slightly later (1667), feminine of mussolino (1629) < mussolo muslin (a1521; < Mussolo (Arabic Al-Mawṣil ), the name of Mosul, a city in modern Iraq where muslin was formerly made) + -ino -ine suffix1. Compare Swedish muslin (1712 in form morselln ), German Musselin (1715), Spanish muselina (a1783), all probably < French or Italian. Compare slightly earlier mosal n., messellawny n. Compare also mousseline n.Compare Old French mosulin cloth of silk and gold made at Mosul (1298, one isolated attestation in Marco Polo; > Italian †mosolino (14th cent.)), ultimately of the same origin. The obsolete English forms mossuline, muslina, mussolin are probably after Italian.
