Etymology: < scientific Latin Myliobatidae, family name (A. Adams Man. Nat. Hist. (1854) 87) or Myliobatides , former family name (J. Müller & J. Henle Systematische Beschreibung der Plagiostomen (1841) 176; compare earlier Myliobatinae (W. Swainson Nat. Hist. Fishes (1838) I. 171), Myliobatini (C. L. Bonaparte Iconografia della fauna italica (1838) III. Introd.)) < Myliobatis , genus name (coined by C. Duméril and published in Cuvier Règne animal (1817) II. 137; < ancient Greek μυλίας , use as noun (short for μυλίας λίθος millstone; compare Byzantine Greek μύλιος λίθος (6th cent.)) of μυλίας of or for a mill ( < μύλη mill, millstone (see meal n.1) + -ίας , suffix forming nouns and adjectives) + βατίς a flatfish, perhaps a skate or ray: see batyl alcohol n.) + scientific Latin -idae (see -id suffix3). Compare French myliobate (1842), Italian myliobati, plural (c1838).

A cartilaginous fish of the family Myliobatidae, comprising the eagle rays, which are large marine rays with long pointed pectoral fins, a long tail, and a distinct head.
