Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μυλών , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μυλών mill-house, mill ( < μύλη , μύλος mill, millstone (see meal n.1) + -ών, suffix forming nouns) + -ite suffix1.Coined by C. Lapworth (see quot. 1885). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (məi·lŏnəit) /ˈmaɪlənaɪt/.
Geology.
A schist, esp. a banded one, resulting from the grinding or crushing of rocks.
