Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch mijnheer.
Etymology: < Dutch mijnheer, mynheer, meneer Mr, sir, gentleman (15th cent. in form mijnheere , 14th cent. in form mijn her , originally a form of address to a feudal lord) < mijn (see mine adj. and pron.) + heer lord, master (see her n.1), perhaps after Middle French, French monseigneur monseigneur n., monsieur monsieur n.Up to the 16th or 17th cent., a distinction was made in Dutch between mijn heere (two words) and the compound mijnheer , the former being used for persons of higher rank. With use in South Africa, compare meneer n. (now the usual form there). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciations (mainhē·r, mənē·r) /maɪnˈhɛːr/ /məˈnɛːr/.
1. As a polite or respectful form of address to a Dutchman or an Afrikaner: sir, mister (Mr). Also used as a title or sometimes substituted for the name of the man or the pronoun that would stand for this. In British use often humorous or ironic.Sometimes applied to a German man, as in quot. 1711: see mein Herr n.
