Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili mzee.
Etymology: < Swahili mzee (plural wazee ) old person, ancestor, elder, person respected for age or status, parent (compare old man n.) < m- class prefix + zee aged, old.Use as a title of respect prefixed to a name is a relatively recent development in Swahili. The Swahili plural form wazee is also occasionally found in English context, especially in the sense ‘ancestors’.
East African.
An old person; an elder. Also used as a title of respect prefixed to a name.Usually limited to African referents. In English use, notably as the title of Jomo Kenyatta (c1894–1978), first Prime Minister (1963–4) and President (1964–78) of Kenya.
