单词 médoc
释义

Médocn.

Brit. /ˌmeɪˈdɒk/, U.S. /ˈmeɪˌdɑk/, /ˈmeɪˌdɔk/
Forms: 1700s– Medoc, 1800s– Médoc.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French médoc.
Etymology: < French médoc (1789) < Médoc, the name of a wine region in south-western France, on the left bank of the Gironde River estuary, north-west of Bordeaux.
Red wine produced in Médoc; (as a count noun) a wine produced in this region. The wine-growing region of Médoc in the Gironde includes most of the best known producers of claret; in earlier quots. Médoc is effectively almost synonymous with fine claret. In more recent use the finest wines are more likely to be labelled, and often to be known, according to one of the commune names (for Médoc, these are currently Margaux, Moulis, Listrac, St-Julien, Pauillac, and St-Estèphe, all in Haut-Médoc). Individually they do not usually bear the regional names Médoc, or Haut-Médoc (although they are entitled to them). Médoc or Haut-Médoc now usually appears on labels of wines from the region which are not entitled to use one of the more prestigious commune names instead. In contemporary use in English it may apply to such wines, or it may be used for the region as a whole. However, the expressions first-growth Médoc, classified-growth Médoc and the like designate the superior wines of the (Haut-)Médoc.
