Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin Nāid-; Greek Ναϊδ-, Ναϊάς.
Etymology: < classical Latin Nāid-, Nāis or its etymon ancient Greek Ναϊδ-, Ναΐς, variant of Ναϊάς naiad n.In senses A. 3 and B. after scientific Latin †Naides, use as family name of plural of Nais (see naïs n.); compare French Naïdes (Cuvier, 1830). On plural forms see note at naïs n.
