Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French naif, niefe.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman naif, neif, nief and the corresponding feminine form niefe, nyefe native inhabitant (late 12th cent.), bondsman, bondswoman (13th cent.) < post-classical Latin nativus native n. Compare earlier naifty n.In writ of naif after Law French briefe de niefe (1585 in the passage translated in quot. 1651 for writ of naif n. at sense 2).
Now historical and rare.
