Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Turkish namaz; Urdu namāz; Persian namāz.
Etymology: Partly < Turkish namaz, partly < Urdu namāz, and partly < their etymon Persian namāz, ultimately cognate with Sanskrit namas obeisance (see namaste n.).In the γ. forms reflecting South Asian colloquial pronunciation.
Islam.
Prayer; spec. the ritual prayers prescribed by Islam to be observed five times daily. Cf. namaz-e-janaza n.This is the usual word in non-Arabic-speaking countries of the former Ottoman and Mughal empires; in other Islamic countries the standard word is ṣalāt (see salat n.). Both words are found in English-speaking contexts.
