Origin: A borrowing from am Algonquian language. Etymon: Western Abenaki moskwas.
Etymology: < Western Abenaki moskwas or the equivalent in Massachusett, perhaps literally ‘the one whose head bobs above the water’; the first syllable has perhaps been influenced by that of muskrat n. The spelling musquassus may represent either an Algonquian diminutive or an English plural. Compare mussascus n., squash n.3
