Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myoma.
Etymology: < scientific Latin myoma (R. Virchow 1854, in Arch. f. pathol. Anat. u. Physiol. 6 553) < myo- myo- comb. form + -oma -oma comb. form. Compare German Myom (R. Virchow Die krankhaften Geschwülste (1867) III. i. xxiii. 97), French myôme (1871).
Pathology.
A benign tumour of muscular origin; esp. a leiomyoma (fibroid) of the uterus.Now more common with distinguishing prefix: see leiomyoma n. at leio- comb. form , rhabdomyoma n. at rhabdo- comb. form .
