Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Myopsida, Myopsidae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Myopsida, originally †Myopsidae, suborder name (A. de Férussac & A. d'Orbigny Hist. nat. des céphalopodes acétabulifères (1848) 220) < ancient Greek μύειν to shut the eyes (see mystery n.¹) + ὄψις sight, eye, iris (see -opsis comb. form) + scientific Latin -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare also (in different sense) myops n.
