Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myosōtis.
Etymology: < classical Latin myosōtis an unidentified plant with leaves like a mouse's ears (Pliny; also myosōta ; in post-classical Latin also denoting lichwort, and the scarlet pimpernel) < Hellenistic Greek μυοσωτίς (Dioscorides) < μυὸς ὦτα (Dioscorides) < ancient Greek μυός , genitive of μῦς mouse (see mouse n.) + ὦτα , nominative plural of οὖς ear (see oto- comb. form). Compare Middle French myosota (1546, Rabelais), Middle French, French myosotis (1545, cited first as a Greek word), Italian miosota (a1498), miosotide (1828), Spanish myosota, miosotis (1606, 1878 as myosotis).
Originally: = mouse-ear n. Now: spec. any plant of the genus Myosotis (family Boraginaceae), comprising the forget-me-nots; (in form Myosotis) the genus itself.The plant described in quot. 1601 cannot be identified with certainty. From the late 18th cent. the term was restricted to Myosotis species.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 131.
