Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian ballabile.
Etymology: < Italian ballabile, noun (1863 or earlier in this spec. sense; 1814 denoting a musical composition for dancing; late 18th cent. as adjective) < ballare to dance (see bale v.1) + -abile -able suffix. Compare French ballabile dance performed by many dancers (1886; < Italian).In plural form ballabili after the Italian plural form.
A dance performed by the company in a ballet, or by the chorus in an opera; a piece of music accompanying this.
