Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Menière.
Etymology: < the name of Prosper Menière (1799–1862), French physician, who described the condition in 1861 ( Bull. de l'Acad. Imp. de Méd. 26 241; see also Gaz. Méd. de Paris (1861) 16 29). Compare French maladie de Menière (1872 or earlier).The form Menière was that used by the physician himself; Ménière was used by his descendants and is also current in French usage; the unaccented form Meniere is probably an English development.

1. Ménière's disease n. a disorder characterized by episodic vertigo, tinnitus, and fluctuating but usually progressive hearing loss, associated with distention of the endolymphatic system of the labyrinth.
