Etymology: < na , representing the cognate words Haida náa to dwell and Tlingit naa tribe + dene, representing their presumed cognate Athapaskan dene people; coined by Edward Sapir (see quot. 1915 at sense A.). Compare Dene adj.2 and n.3 O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the pronunciation as (nā·dəne·) /ˈnɑːdəˈneɪ/.
