Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans naat.
Etymology: < Afrikaans naat (1940 or earlier in naatdiamant ), specific use of naat seam, suture < Dutch naad (ultimately < a derivative < the same base as needle n.).There is no etymological connection with knot n.1 (compare quots. 1945, 1984).
Gem-cutting.
An irregularity in the structure of a diamond, caused by a change of direction in the grain as a result of twinning (see twinning n.2 2). Also: a diamond having such a feature; such diamonds collectively.
